“Should I detox?” This question comes up so many times in the course of my day working with clients.  There is talk in media about celebrities and their detox programs, and you see ads and products for detoxing everywhere you turn. Our bodies are designed to detoxify themselves.  That said, we are often exposed to more toxins in our daily lives than our bodies can handle.  Detox programs can be expensive, and the benefits are not always proven, plus, some people feel really terrible when they start an intensive detox program.  There are however, some easy ways to help your body do what it is designed to do.  Here are three of my favorite ways to incorporate detox into my daily life.

Daily Detox Practices:

  • Drink more water.  This can’t be said enough, your body releases waste and there are only so many ways that waste can get out of your body.  Staying hydrated helps you flush toxins out of your system all day long.  Add citrus, mint or cucumber for flavor.
  • Sweat.  Move your body in any way that gets your blood moving and your body sweating.  You can also take a hot bath, or spend some time in a sauna.  Again, sweat releases stored toxins, it also keeps everything moving, which is vital when helping your body release waste.
  • Eat whole foods.  Forget the fancy, (and expensive) pressed juices and complicated recipes, one of the simplest ways to help your body is to eat whole foods (this means it doesn’t have an ingredients label).  Replace one packaged food with whole food at each meal, and your body will thank you.

Incorporate these simple practices into your daily life, and you’ll sleep better, have more energy, clearer skin, and most likely, a smaller waistline.

Simple Detox Salad:

Chop, shred or grate the following (to your taste): napa cabbage, kale, cilantro, carrots, parsley, lettuce, beets, radishes, and broccoli(add any other veggies you love).  Mix in a bowl and add your choice of kidney, black or garbanzo beans.  Top with sliced avocado and drizzle with olive oil and lemon. Enjoy!!
